Impact of COVID-19 on Routine Immunization, Reproduction and Pregnancy Outcome

There are many questions and genuine worries about pregnancy and COVID-19. Available evidence suggests that pregnant women are at no greater risk of becoming seriously ill than other healthy adults if they develop coronavirus. The large majority of pregnant women experience only mild or moderate flu-like symptoms. The big question is about the situation for the fetus and the unborn child in general. The virus is newly discovered, and the literature is still scarce, with many newly started or planned studies. So far there is no evidence for increased risk of miscarriage. However, emerging evidence suggests that transmission from a woman to her baby during pregnancy or birth is probable. Reports are now coming suggesting premature deliveries associated with transmitted virus. But it is very unclear if the coronavirus caused these premature births, or whether it was recommended that their babies were born early for the benefit of the women’s health and to enable them to recover. So there are many unsolved questions and perspectives. The lecture will present ongoing and planned studies those can shed light on possible effects of the COVID-19 on pregnancy and pregnancy outcome.

The Covid-19 pandemic has led to a decrease in immunization coverage rates and this issue, if not properly addressed, could lead to outbreaks of vaccine-preventable infectious diseases in the coming months. The reasons that led to a decrease in vaccination coverage have been manifold and must be carefully analyzed in order to identify and plan the best possible interventions to maintain and increase vaccination coverage rates. It must be avoided that damage caused by COVID-19 is also compounded by damage from other epidemics.

On Tuesday 30 June 2020, MDPI and the journal IJERPH organized the 8th State-of-the-Art Webinars on COVID-19 Research with the title « Impact of COVID-19 on Routine Immunization, Reproduction and Pregnancy Outcome »

The following expert researchers gave a talk: Prof. Dr. Jon Øyvind Odland and Prof. Dr. Giovanni Gabutti.

Prof. Dr. Jon Øyvind Odland is professor of global health at the NTNU The Norwegian University of Science and Technology, MD, PhD, specialist in GYN/OB, environmental medicine, and epidemiology. He held a presentation with the title: “Pregnancy and COVID-19. Updated Knowledge”.

His presentation was followed by Prof. Dr. Giovanni Gabutti, who is professor of Hygiene and Preventive Medicine at the University of Ferrara, Ferrara, Italy, MD, specialist in Hygiene and Preventive Medicine, and in Microbiology and Medical Virology. He talked about the Impact of COVID-19 on Routine Immunizations.

Their presentations were followed by a discussion and Q&A session.
